AEA R84 Ribbon Microphone

The AEA R84 passive ribbon microphone brings rich low-mids, a smooth top end, and a natural sense of space to vocals and instruments. Inspired by the classic R44, this studio workhorse combines AEA’s Big Ribbon design with a lighter, more practical package and milder proximity effect, making it equally useful up close or capturing the room.

Classic Ribbon Character, Everyday Versatility

Reach for the R84 when a voice needs body, strings need a smooth presentation, or brass and drums call for a full sound without an aggressive top end. Its reduced proximity effect compared with the R44 gives you more flexibility at close distances, while its bidirectional pickup pattern suits ambient recording in medium-sized rooms.

Developed by Wes Dooley and the AEA team after their work recreating the RCA 44, the R84 was introduced in 2001. It retains the R44 series’ Big Ribbon, tuning, and transformer in a more efficient, lighter, and more accessible design.

Big Ribbon Design for Natural Sound

The R84 uses a low-tension, pure aluminum ribbon measuring 2.35 inches long by 0.185 inch wide. AEA’s Large Ribbon Geometry provides room for ribbon movement and a low resonant frequency, supporting smooth reproduction and high sound-pressure handling. AEA describes most of its ribbons as tuned to 16.5 Hz, below the R84’s specified 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency range.

The native figure-8 pattern picks up sound from the front and rear, with deep nulls at the sides. Horizontal off-axis response remains tonally consistent as the level changes, while sound arriving above or below the microphone’s main axis has reduced high-frequency response. Use placement to balance the direct source, room sound, and rejection of unwanted sound at the sides.

A Proven Studio Workhorse

The R84 has been used at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and Sear Sound in New York City. Its recording history includes award-winning projects such as Turtle Island String Quartet’s A Love Supreme, Los Tigres Del Norte’s MTV Unplugged, Juanes’ MTV Unplugged, and Zac Brown Band’s Uncaged.
