TS or TRS? A quick guide
Both are 1/4-inch plugs. The difference is the number of metal contact sections on the plug, separated by black insulating rings.
- TS (tip–sleeve): One black ring and two contact sections. Common for unbalanced instrument connections, such as a guitar to an amp. For a typical guitar cable, start with TS to TS cables or TS connectors for a build or repair.
- TRS (tip–ring–sleeve): Two black rings and three contact sections. Used for balanced mono connections, stereo headphone signals, and some insert connections. If your equipment specifies a balanced 1/4-inch connection, start with TRS to TRS cables or TRS connectors.
Before you buy: Check the labels or manual for both devices. A TRS plug does not automatically make a signal balanced; the equipment and wiring must support it. Match the connection type and cable ends your gear requires.
