XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors both show up constantly in pro audio, and both are capable of carrying a balanced signal — which leads to a lot of confusion about when to use which. Here's the practical breakdown.
XLR Connectors
XLR is the round, 3-pin locking connector you see on nearly every professional microphone, and on the inputs/outputs of mixers, preamps, and stage boxes. It's built for balanced audio, and its locking collar makes it the standard choice anywhere a cable might get tugged, stepped on, or run a long distance — stages, studios, and snakes.
- Pin 1: Ground/shield
- Pin 2: Hot (+)
- Pin 3: Cold (−)
- Best for: Microphones, snakes, long balanced runs, anywhere a secure connection matters
TRS Connectors
TRS stands for Tip-Ring-Sleeve — the same 1/4" plug shape used for unbalanced instrument cables, but with an extra contact ring that allows it to carry a balanced signal (or stereo signal, in headphone applications). TRS is common on synth and mixer balanced outputs, patch bays, and effects loops.

- Best for: Balanced line-level connections, patch bays, synths and mixers with 1/4" balanced I/O
Important: a TRS plug looks identical whether it's carrying a balanced mono signal or an unbalanced stereo signal (like on a headphone jack) — always check what your gear actually expects before assuming.
XLR to TRS: When You Need a Converter Cable
It's common to need to connect a balanced XLR output to a TRS input (or vice versa) — for example, running a mixer's balanced output into a device with 1/4" balanced inputs. A properly wired XLR-to-TRS cable keeps the signal balanced across the whole run, which matters for noise rejection on longer cable lengths.
