Mic of the Month - October 2017 - Earthworks SR20 Cardioid Condenser Microphone
October's Mic of the Month is the Earthworks SR20 cardioid microphone, which is a multi-purpose vocal & instrument microphone designed for live performances and studio recordings. The SR20 has been called "The Workhorse", which is very fitting. The great thing about this microphone is that you can almost use it on anything you'd like. Personally, I have only used it in a studio setting so far but I do plan to try it in the live setting soon. It comes with the screw-on metal mesh screen that turns it instantly into a vocal microphone. I know what you are thinking. It is hard to dial in a very sensitive microphone like this one in a live setting, when there are some many other instruments on stage that could cause the microphone to squeal very easily. The SR20 has a very impressive 32dB rear rejection, which rejects off axis noise and feedback from surrounding instruments and ambient stage volume very well.
If I had to explain the sound of this microphone in one word it would be "clarity". It has a very flat response ranging from 50Hz-20kHz. The first instrument that I tried this microphone on was, acoustic guitar. For these session in particular I had one SR20 positioned around the 12 fret and one toward the back body of the guitar. I was very impressed. The detail that I was hearing during playback was incredible. I could hear every little movement from the artist's fingers while he was fingerpicking the strings. One thing that I noticed right off is the very minimal EQ that I had to do in post production. I have always had a difficult time getting the "boomy" sound out of the recordings while recording acoustic. Not the case with the SR20. What you are hearing in the room while recording is what you hear during playback. If you are looking for a microphone that is going to color your sound, this probably wouldn't be your first choice.
The transparency of this microphone makes it very versatile. It also sounds amazing on piano, drums, horns, strings etc. This workhorse will handle up to 139dB SPL without distorting. Don't let that tiny capsule fool you. It sounds fantastic. If you want to hear for yourself how this mic sounds, we do have one in stock that you can demo. Give us a call for more details. You won't be disappointed.
